“1. Project Needs and Client Requirements
a. The Lot is a steeply sloping 1.3 ac lot with many natural granite boulder out-croppings. At the top of the lot there are distant views to the San Francisco Peaks. The house will be organically designed to flow and become one with the natural contouring of the land. One of the Hinshaw’s favorite FLLW houses is Fallingwater.
b. The home will be a partial two story (walk out lower level) with most of the activities on the main level. A future elevator will be part of the planning and design.
c. The new house design will be a great room concept incorporating a living space, kitchen and dining with a master suite and home theater nearby. The lower level will have his and her offices with space for a spare bedroom and shared bath. A two car garage will be provided near the front door but a few feet lower than the main entry door. All major rooms should have views to the distant mountains in the northeast. The house should be designed to incorporate views of many of major rock outcroppings as possible.
d. All the spaces are designed to exceed standard ADA requirements.
e. Natural light was requested in all major areas without increasing solar gain.
f. House to be designed incorporating both passive solar design concepts with high quality insulation and windows with Low E insulated glazing.
2. Project Solutions and Opportunities
a. After seeing the lot and having the surveyor provide accurate locations of the natural slope of the land and the location of the rock outcroppings preliminary design sketches were presented showing how the new design natural followed and became an extension of the lot, while providing the spaces and functions they wanted to live in and their new home to provide.
b. The exterior materials were chosen to harmonize with the natural boulders and colors of the natural vegetation. The Hinshaw’s requested their new home as very low maintenance for the exterior materials. We chose with a 30 year, multi-colored asphalt shingle roof that terminates to a decorative wood fascia. This decorative fascia creates a small broken line on the house just as the edge of the horizon is gently broken by mountains, trees and structures off in the distance. All exterior walls are constructed with 2×6’s and are sprayed with insulation and then covered with either horizontal “Artisan” Hardie Plank or 2” thick ledge stone from Mount Mariah, Nevada. The windows are made from JELD-WEN and are aluminum clad exterior with a clear alder wood on the interior. The wood will be stained to a rich cherry color and finish. The house has dramatic clerestory windows that face north which will keep the house light and bright during the day. A large dramatic stone clad fireplace and entertainment center will anchor the house to the lot. Two story corner windows offer dramatic views to the northeast from the dining area and stairwell. On the exterior these two story glass corners give a striking similarity to Frank Lloyd Wrights detailing on Fallingwater.
c. The dining area in the great room has floor to ceiling glass that provides maximum views to Prescott below and off in the distance. This room has two full height corners windows that maximize the views.
d. The great room has north facing clerestory windows that have the exposed roof trusses covered with stained Alder plywood veneer .
e. The ceilings in most room are accented with small stained wood trim stripes that follow the multi-directions of the ceiling planes.
f. The stairwell that connects the house to the lower walk out level has almost 20’ of corner windows that provide natural views and light deeper into the spaces on the lower level.
g. The master bath room bathing area is completely open with corners windows with distant views to Prescott and more intimate views to natural boulder outcroppings on the lot.
h. A small sunken Japanese tub is located in the corner of the space. The shower wall in created with large decorative marble slabs that provides easy maintenance and a decorative art wall .
i. Each room has indirect decorative light coves that creates lower scales around the perimeter of each space and provided decorative accent lighting on the higher ceilings.
j. The entry foyer and low wall separating the foyer and kitchen have organically inspired glazing that has a new overlay process of colored film that gives the expression of art glass at a fraction of the cost.
k. The lower level bedroom that was placed directly on the boulders so small decorative “Porte-hole” windows were design to give focused views of these boulders while maintaining privacy in the bedroom space.
l. The baseboard for each room is a continuation of the flooring material up the wall, the height of the toe kick of cabinets. This base is then trimmed with a small hardwood trim.
m. All interior fixtures and furniture was selected to harmonize with the character and spirit of the architecture. Square ceiling lights and square fire suppression fixtures were carefully chosen to carry the architecture through to the smallest details. LED lights were installed where higher quality lighting is required to showcase design features. “
